Chapter 5

The first thing that I found interesting in this chapter was how fast the human develops. I think that it is pretty neat that the brain of a human can develop and mature so fast. A year after a baby is born their cerebral cortex will double in size. The reason I thought that this was neat and intersting was because I thought that the brain took more time to develop. I thought that the brain would be double in size after the second or third year.
The second thing that I found interesting was how deprivation has such an impact on babies. I really didn't know that deprivation from your parents could lead you to be very agressive or very shy and scared. The study that Harlow did with her monkeys was pretty neat I didn't know how much in common humans have with monkeys.
The final thing that I found interesting was basic trust. I thought that this was interesting because kids say things that can be hurtful to parents but in the end they will come back to them because they know that their parents can be trusted. They know that they can go to them and talk to them about anything and they will listen.

Chapter 4

There was a lot of things that I found interestin in this chapter. The first thing that I found was interesting was how fraternal twins may look exactly like their twin but not be identical. For example Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. I always thought that they were identical twins because they looked a like but they weren't because they both had their own placentas.

The second thing that I found interesting in this chapter was how people have personal space. People in different countries have way different personal spaces than those in the US. People in certain continents would go up and kiss a person when they would greet them including males kissing males. In the US people wouldn't even think of doing that because they would be teased because they were kissing the same sex.
The last thing that I found interesting was that how children can pick so much up from their parents. When parents are neat organized and have very good hygene their children usually will pick up this trait because it is something that their parents do so they must have to do it. I also think that this is how kids learn so fast and that is by learning from their parents. My dad has taught me a lot about cars because I have watched him for so long and because he has showed me how to fix the cars.

Implicit Association Test (Black and White)

In the test that I did you were to tell whether the picture that showed up was either black or white. I thought that when they incorporated the words that were negative and positive with the pictures it made it kind of harder because I would be thinking of the pictures and not the words and it would mess me up every once and awhile. I also felt that test was set up so that you would get the answer that Harvard wanted.

Chapter 3 Consciousness and the Two Track Mind

When reading this section I learned a lot of things. Probably one of the things that stuck in my head the most would be that sleep deprivation has a big affect on gaining weight. I did not know that sleep deprivation increases the hunger-arousing hormone ghrelin and decreases its hunger-suppressing partner, leptin. I didn't think that sleep deprivation had such a big affect on the factor of weight. Probably the most suprising thing to me was the affect that sleep has on the gainof weight and the loss of weight.
One thing that I would agree with in this chapter is that kids these days are getting two hours less sleep each night than did their counterparts of 80 years ago. I agree with it because I am one of those kids that don't get enough sleep at night time. Usually I am up late studying or getting homework done.
There really isn't anything that I would disagree about in this chapter because I think that it is all true .

Chapter 2

When reading this chapter I had learned a lot of different things. The first thing that I had learned from this chapter was that the brain is a very, very complex organ. I had no clue how many different things go into making up the brain. When reading the chapter I had no clue what the heck pons, reticular formations, amygdala's, or Hippocampus's were but know I kind of have a clue on what they are.

The second thing that I learned was that people that have epilectic seiziures can be fixed by actually cutting the brain in half at the corpus collosum and still live. I had no clue that you could do that until I saw the video about the man with two brains. Then I learned that the man that had two brains could actually draw two different shapes at one time. I thought that it was pretty cool that when he would see something on one side of his head he would either point at the picture or he would say what he saw.

The last thing that I had learned in this chapter was that you can actually control a rat with a remote control. I never thought that an animal could be run by a remote contol fused into its brain. I thought that, that was pretty sweet and very interesting.

This stuff can be applied to my life in many differnt ways. In one way it can be used is I now know what controls the functions of my brain. I now know that if I would ever have seizures there is a possible solution to fixing the seizures and that is to cut the brain in half.

A man with Two Brains

I thought that the video was very interesting especially when the guy was able to draw two pictures at once. I tried to do the same project but it didn't work to well I would start drawing a figure and it wouldn't be the figure I was trying to draw. I also thought that it was pretty cool how the doctors were able to cut the mans brain in half and he would still be able to live a normal life.
